Free Cursor
A common camera choice for MMORPG's, the Free Cursor camera mode allows players to freely move their cursor around the screen. Click anywhere on the screen, interface, or aim all from one mode. Hold the right mouse button and drag to pan your avatar's view, moving them in a direction with the WASD keys relative to the camera.
Fixed Reticle
A typical camera choice for first or third-person shooters, Ootherwise known as "Mouselook", is also available in Stars Reach. A reticle is positionined in or near the center of the screen for aiming, while the WASD movement keys function in a typical first or third-person shooter fashion.

Free Cursor mode tends to lend itself to building and climbing scenarios, while aiming a weapon or zooming lends itself to the Fixed Reticle camera mode.

Stormtrooper: Initial publishing

From a very early stage, Stars Reach had plans to support various forms of movement. This is because its planets are generated procedurally, causing the geography and landscape to be unpredicatable. Not to mention the complexity of weather-related elements such as mud, water, and ice.

Traversal Modes
With many wild possibilities, this called for a variety of creative, yet fluid, traversal modes and animations. Many of these movements are powered by a Stamina resource. Here's a list of movement possibilities in the game so far:

*Walk
*Run
*Sprint
*Climb
*Dodge-Roll
*Slide
*Fly (Thrust)
*Grappling

Hanging was available internally for a time, but due to some frustrations with other movement systems, it has been cut... for now.

Swimming is not yet available, but planned. This will likely be revealed at the same time as space suit travel since the animations and movements are likely to share many commonalities.

Walk, Run, Sprint, Climb
As of now, movement is slowed as you move up slopes, traverse through water, mud, tall grass, and other environmental hazards. Skills will be able to affect some of these movement conditions.

Dodge-Roll
A Roll, or a Dodge-Roll, is a movement in which the avatar tumbles in a specified direction. This can be used for dodging incoming fire, or a simple way to add variety while running or sprinting.

Slide
Avatars will slide down slopes, as well as on ice. Players will slide around on ice with simple inertia modifiers. Sliding down slopes was tested and then turned off as a result of too many deaths off the edge of cliffs. We'll have to see if this returns.

Grappling
Grappling is a relatively late addition to the movement system, and one that initially required a tool to perform. However, playtesting proved this an extremely fun traversal mode and it is now considered a base movement capability that all avatars will receive.

Fly (Thrust)
Flight originally felt like a simple anti-gravitty mode among the likes of flight in World of Warcraft. However, wanting more of a skill-ceiling to flight in Stars Reach, the current system resembles flight with a jetpack.

Fall Damage
As mentioned with Sliding, avatars will take fall damage when falling from certain heights. However, with many creative traversal options, alert and aware players should have various means of mitigating or avoiding too many frustrating deaths from falling.

"Stars Reach uses simulation to a degree never seen in an MMO before. We know the temperature, the humidity, the materials, for every cubic meter of every planet. Our water actually flows downhill and puddles. It freezes overnight or during the winter. It evaporates and turns to steam when heated up."

"And not just our water -- everything does this. Catch a tree on fire with a stray blaster bolt. Melt your way through a glacier to find a hidden alien laboratory embedded in the ice. Stomp too hard on a rock bridge, and watch out, it might collapse under your feet. Dam up a river to irrigate your farm. Or float in space above an asteroid, and mine crystals from its depths. And this works everywhere, it's not special-cased handcrafted moments."

"We track temperature diffusion through the world. We track humidity by aggregating smaller cells to determine larger area humidities. Then we make all the rendering be dynamic based on what the sim is telling us. The plants turn brown, the dirt gets cracks, etc."

In the Stars Reach Discord, Raph Koster spoke briefly about different species of grass, suggesting that the grass species will vary by heat and humidity. The primary difference mentioned in his example was the saturation of the color. Whether or not the physical characteristics of the grass species will be affected (such as blade width, length, thickness, etc.) is still unknown.

Best practices and tips for writing articles on the Unofficial Stars Reach Wiki.

*It is everyone's responsibility to ensure that the information contained herein is factually accurate and presented in a neutral and concise manner.
*Please ensure that all substantial information is backed up with a citation from an official source.
*Please don't duplicate information.
**Use templates, where available.
**Always check if information or images exist prior to adding new content.
*Nothing is set in stone, not even the wiki structure or these help pages. If you dispute anything in the wiki, make a comment on the appropriate discussion page, and/or, edit the article in question to correct the information, and/or, make a post on the wiki support forum.

These policies and guidelines apply to all content pages of this wiki. All content must also comply with legal and copyright laws.

Wikipedia's Simplified Manual of Style to follow.

Headings
Headings help to organize an article and its content. Please always begin with Heading 1 (the largest). Heading 2 is only slightly smaller text, and still creates a horizontal bar below the heading. Therefore, it is permissable to jump to Heading 3 when a second horizontal bar is not desired.

Using a minimum of 3 Heading 1 headings on a page will automatically generate a Table of Contents for the page. Please organize article content using this structure for consistency, as well as to help readers quickly navigate through the content on the page and throughout this wiki.

Heading Examples
*Heading 1 <code>=Heading 1 Title=</code>
*Heading 2 <code>==Heading 2 Title==</code>
*Heading 3 <code>===Heading 3 Title===</code>
*Heading 4 <code>====Heading 4 Title====</code>
*Heading 5 <code>=====Heading 5 Title=====</code>

Lists
There are two types of lists, Numbered and Bulleted. Numbered lists increase sequentially for each item in a list at the same indent level. Bulleted lists use a simple bullet for each item in a list at the same indent level.

Numbered List items are preceeded by a pound (#) character.
Bulleted List items arer preceeeded by an asterisk (*) character.

Indenting, or tabbing, a Numbered list will start the numbering process from 1 at that indent level. Indenting, or tabbing, a Bulleted list will change the style of the bullets for that indent level.

In order to indent, or tab, and item in a list, simply add an additional character (# for Numbered, * for Bulleted) of the list type, up to 5. Do not skip over an indentation level, else multiple Numbers or Bullets will print.

References
Any material that is challenged or likely to be challenged, and for all quotations used, a citation (or reference) is mandatory. This helps maintain the verifiability and integrity of this wiki.

Reference Types
*An Inline citation should be included close to the material it supports (i.e. after a sentence or paragraph).
*in-text attribution should be included immediately following any direct quote.
*A general reference can be included when an entire article is from a single source, or if the source offers supplemental information to the overall article without a direct reference.

Reference Examples
<pre></pre>

When using the same reference more than once in an article, give the reference a name. Using the example above, it would look like this: (replacing "text" with an appropriate name, retaining the quotes).

<pre></pre>

Then you can refer back to this same reference further in the article by calling that name again with a much smaller snippet of code, like this: (with "text" being the name you assigned the reference earlier, retaining the quotes).

<pre></pre>

The final text and heading on every article should be <code>=References=</code> for listing references. There should be no text below this when editing an article.

Dates
Dates can appear in a variety of formats across the world. For this reason, a standard date format of DD MMM YYYY (31 Jan 2024) has been adopted for this wiki. This military format is one of the most recognized globally, according to Wikipedia.

When editing or writing content on this wiki, please follow this guideline to maintain consistency and uniformity for visitors.

*Heading 1 <code>=Heading 1 Title=</code>
*Heading 2 <code>==Heading 2 Title==</code>
*Heading 3 <code>===Heading 3 Title===</code>
*Heading 4 <code>====Heading 4 Title====</code>
*Heading 5 <code>=====Heading 5 Title=====</code>

When referencing a single source, please use the following structure as a template:
<pre></pre>
Crafting is a crucial aspect of gameplay in Stars Reach, allowing players to create a vast array of items, from useful tools and equipment to decorative objects. The game's deep crafting system supports both mass production and artisanal craftsmanship, enabling players to experiment with stats and create unique items. Additionally, players can brand and visually customize their products, aiming to build game-wide fame as crafters, with the potential to become as influential as combatants within the galaxy.

Crafting Overview
The crafting system is designed to be both comprehensive and flexible. Players can craft thousands of items, leveraging a system that supports both large-scale manufacturing and individual craftsmanship. The game emphasizes the importance of player experimentation, allowing crafters to modify the stats of their creations to achieve unique results. This system encourages a deep engagement with the crafting process, as players strive to perfect their products and establish themselves as renowned artisans in the game's economy.

Crafting Progression
Progression in crafting within Stars Reach is tied to the utility of crafted items rather than just their creation. Players earn progression when others use the items they've crafted, emphasizing the importance of producing high-quality, desirable goods. This system contrasts with traditional crafting systems where players gain experience primarily through the repetitive creation of items.

Recipe Management
Crafting also involves strategic management of recipes. Players cannot gather all available recipes; instead, they must choose which recipes to learn and retain within their limited recipe book space. This limitation requires players to make decisions about their crafting specialization, contributing to the game's overall depth and complexity.

Harvesting is the means by which players gather and accumulate resources in preparation for Crafting, Building, or other in-game activities -- essentially personalizing their characters and space within Stars Reach. Harvesting spans several Professions, each requiring unique Tools for harvesting a given resources type. Players may harvest on the surface of planets, within community-run and private farms, in addition to space asteroids.

Harvesting Resources
Currently, plants, trees, and minerals have been metioned as gatherable (and destroyable, if permitted by the governing bodies of the planet) from the open world.

With Star Wars: Galaxies being a large influence on the gathering and crafting professions in Stars Reach, we might also see gasses and organic materials such as leathers, hides, bones, and meats harvestable.

Like Star Wars: Galaxiles, resources will shift and move in order to promote exploration and the discovery of new resource locations.

Resources can also be exhausted, while some are renewable and regenerate over time. Some you can import from one world to another. This temporary unavailability is likely to create economic opportunity.

Resources are initially spawned when the planet is created. Each resource will appear in a place that makes sense for it to be in. All of this is based on the planet's topography profile and then simulated.

Harvesting Professions
Stars Reach 40+ professions will include several specifically related to harvesting. Based upon current information, we expect some variation of Mining, Logging, and Herbalism. If we look at Star Wars: Galaxies as reference, we're likely to also see some form of Hunting/Skinning, Gas harvesting, and Liquid harvesting professions.

Harvesting Tools
Harvesting will require specific tools to gather specific resources. With a limited number of tools/weapons able to be equipped at a time (5 is the current limit), this is likely to require players plan ahead for their journey and the resources they desire to harvest.

Harvesting Skills
Tools will allow players to gain Skills in their respective harvesting professions. Like Combat, Skills are likely to play a part in the speed, volume, and rarity of materials being harvested during the harvesting process.

Farming
Player and community-run farms have also been teased. Farms will enforce permissions so that only players with appropriate access can utilize them, thus reducing griefing.

Planet Creation
Planets will be able to be created and destroyed. It is still unknown if players will have the ability to create planets, but they can certainly strip them to their core. Mining a planet to its bedrock and driving all the plants and creatures extinct will render a planet uninhabitable and barren. Assuming these planets will be removed from the galaxy, how the planet will be removed is not yet known. Planets could despawn, be destroyed in a supernova-esque explosion that affects nearby planets and objects in space, or other means.

Planet Design
Every planet in Stars Reach is unique. Level designers can create topography templates that describe with data the preferred slope of mountains and width of canyons. These act as authoring "rules" to generate landscapes that can mimic or mirror the Bolivian salt flats, the Grand Canyon, and more.
Using a topography, level designers can select a set and blend them to create a new planet. Caves, mineral veins, and other points of interest can then be dropped in. They can even define the level of gravity, length of the year, and impact of the seasons.
More research is needed, but wormholes have been mentioned as being able to spawn and collapse. While generally associated with fast travel, wormholes will bring a very dynamic element of travel to the Stars Reach galaxy and we look forward to learning more about them.
"Moving to group play should be more of a crossgrade — group play is a function of trust, and people have limited budgets of trust. Long ago, an incredibly powerful ancient alien civilization terraformed the Galaxy into their Garden. They had the ability to tear open holes in the fabric of space itself and build an interstellar subway network of wormholes, complete with worms inside. Their technology seems like magic to us now.

But they are long gone. We don’t even know what they looked like, or what they called themselves. We don’t think they looked like C’thulhu, but we call them the Old Ones.

They were arrogant and powerful enough to create life. Their first try was mechanical life, driven by artificial intelligence. If they’d only watched more 20th and 21st century Earth media, they would have known better!

Because of course their robots promptly rebelled and attempted to exterminate all organic life in the Galaxy.

The Old Ones won the Robot Wars and subjugated their creations. To this day, their robot Servitors roam the spacelanes, tending the terraformed worlds of the Garden and following the orders of their long-vanished masters. Some may even dream of freedom. For all we know, some have already broken loose of their programming and lurk in the distant asteroid fields ready to crunch organic entities into goo between their giant steel-plated teeth.

The Old Ones then moved on to genetic engineering. It didn’t go smoothly. When they made a mistake, they would tell the Servitors to just throw the goo away over on that asteroid over there. Well, the Servitors, being robots, were very literal, and threw it all away on that one asteroid, that one right there, where it merged together into a biological hive mind that calls itself the Cornucopia.
We humans were also creations of the Old Ones. Not just the humans that look like hairless monkeys, but also the ones that look like cats, or like demons… lots of kinds of humans, different on the outside but all the same on the inside.

And we’re all only human after all, which is why we have all managed to ruin our homeworlds. Some are falling prey to nuclear winters; some to climate change. Some are hitting peak oil, and believe it or not one might perish to a global pandemic, as implausible as that sounds.

And so it was that the Servitors felt obliged to let us off our homeworlds. After all, if the Old Ones returned to find more of their pets extinct, they might be angry. No one knows what an angry Old One might do. Or if they are still out there watching…

Just as scary is the idea that they are gone because they ran into something even more powerful than they were…
So far, there has been no evidence of melee combat in Stars Reach. * We also want it to be deep. So we look at MOBAs a lot for weapon variety and tradeoffs and the like. Avi, gameplay engineer on combat, has said that he wants the system flexible enough to make every attack in LoL possible for designers.
* But we know that a lot of MMO players are fans of tactical thinking and tab targeting and the like too! Weapons can be customized to have varying degrees of lock-on. There are tradeoffs there -- if you have tab lock on, then maybe in exchange for aim not being required, you have a tradeoff on firing pace, damage done, etc. You can actually see homing shots already in the videos we released.
"We are partners with several folks on the technology side: AWS, Didimo for avatars, Okteto for backend stuff, etc. No publishers yet."

"We still render the game on your local client. We are not pixel streaming like GeForce Now or Stadia. So client perf will still have dependencies on your local hardware.

But we do the heavy lifting for a lot of the game using cloud-based hardware. Running the full scale world sim locally would be a big ask for many computers."

Question: Can you please give an overview of the data and networking architecture and technology so that we can understand what's possible from a practical perspective of scale, community, and "discovery" gameplay experience.

You've mentioned that things will be discovered- and I wonder how this may get around our inhibit data mining meta. Additionally, I'm curious about the metaversal infrastructure, and how it relates to different players.

Answer: We have posted some of this in blogs on the Playable Worlds website. Think of it this way, which is *inaccurate* but a good mental model:

* a single server process handles a zone (not really, but go with me here)
* you can bubble it up or shut it down based on traffic
* you hyperlink between them to build a galaxy
* each manages its own persistence
* central DB manages global state for things that travel between them
* assets stream down to clients like they do on the web, and go into cache like on the web, and we can clear the cache or cap it, like the web, and don't need to patch to deliver them
* most all gameplay is in softcode on the server, so we can update it on the fly

RE: Stars Reach adopting Unity:

"The story with Unity versus Unreal is actually much more complicated than that.

Unreal is just a more monolithic engine. If you want to replace one part, a lot of other parts start getting pulled out too. It’s more expensive to mod it into something different. Among those things that you need to do for an MMO is replace the networking, which in Unreal’s case also often means chunks of the physics and the animation system, because Unreal’s networking model is based on high frequency network replication. Unreal is actually hardcoded at one byte’s worth of index for player counts. Its server model is too heavy for cloud usage, too, costs too much to run. Which is why the MMOs that use it run custom backends entirely, and replace the networking system. We also run a custom backend, of course, but are able to leverage more of Unity’s networking in the process.

We started with Unreal, actually, and ended up having to switch because of the development costs and being a relatively small shop."

RE: The number of possibilities of reactions within Stars Reach, Raph Koster elaborated upon this in an MMORPG.com discussion:

"The number of reaction scenarios we need to have for the entire game is well under 100. And they tend to fall into really broad swaths of types, so we only needed to make around a half dozen of those.

Next, it's all data driven already, so those are just entries in a table. It is all run off abstract properties. We do not need to define how oak responds to fire, everything made of wood reacts the same way. We *can* do things like more or less speed in burning, but that's just a number field, and it's optional.

We don't need to make every cell remember your footstep. We just need to make any cell able to respond to a footstep based on what's in the cell.

Basically, it's all very generic rules. So generic, in fact, that the forest burning, the river flowing, and rock eroding to sand all work in the exact same way."

*Heading 1 <code>=Heading 1 Title=</code>
*Heading 2 <code>==Heading 2 Title==</code>
*Heading 3 <code>===Heading 3 Title===</code>
*Heading 4 <code>====Heading 4 Title====</code>
*Heading 5 <code>=====Heading 5 Title=====</code>

When referencing a single source, please use the following structure as a template:

<pre></pre>

When using the same reference more than once in an article, give the reference a name. Using the example above, it would look like this: (replacing "text" with an appropriate name, retaining the quotes)

<pre></pre>

Then you can refer back to this same reference further in the article by calling that name again with a much smaller snippet of code, like this: (with "text" being the name you assigned the reference earlier, retaining the quotes)

<pre></pre>

The final text and heading on every article should be <code>=References=</code> for listing references. There should be no text below this when editing an article. An example of this text is below.

Stormtrooper: Updated headings to H1, Added references heading

Stars Reach was announced on June 28, 2024 - nearly 5 years after the initial unveiling of the company. The announcement happened via a game trailer, accompanied by a Q&A video and another video on the design vision.

Reception was mainly positive, especially among fans of Raph and his previous games but there also was significant criticism about the unpolished pre-alpha graphics and the colorful, stylized art-style. Comments along the lines of "this looks like a mobile game for little kids" were not uncommon.

The developers have said that the game is still very early pre-alpha, and that the graphics are work in progress. Shaders, animations, post processing, etc. are all still due for multiple improvements and overhauls - possibly including Global Illumination. But the stylized, colorful look is intentional and here to stay. They are ultimately aiming for a visual style somewhere between Breath of the Wild and Genshin Impact.

Pre-Announcement ARG Puzzle
The game announcement was hyped up by a ten day countdown of revealing questions posted on social media. The questions themselves do tell you something about the kind of game that Stars Reach does aim to be - but each image also contained a bar of black and white boxes, which - if combined in the right order - revealed a pixelated version of the game logo with two hands reaching for a star.

Despite getting pretty close, the early community was not able to solve the puzzle in time for the game announcement.

Design Pillars

Stormtrooper: Updated headings to H1, Added references heading

The design of Stars Reach is guided by three primary game pillars. Each pillar is supported by three goals, which provide design rules that the game has to follow. It's core to managing a complex project and keeps everyone aligned toward the same goals.

These are the defining philosophies that animate everything in the game design.

First Set: Alive Online World
(Source)

"Alive" includes both what the players do, and what the world does (and how they interact).

The idea here is to make the game behave and react in believable ways. Water runs down a hill, snow can pile up, dry sand is soft and will not hold a shape, hard rock can be carved, things can be molten, frozen, set on fire, collapsed, washed away, and so on.

The game will run off simulation
Most games typically rely on scripted events, hand-crafted cut-scenes, carefully prepared set-pieces and pre-written dialogue to show what is happening in the world. Every player gets to see exactly the same happenings, whenever they are at the right place in the storyline and trigger them happening. Or in classical themepark MMOs you often don't even see it happening - but rather an NPCs just tells players what happened. Sometimes you get branching paths - where the player can decide to do either A or B - and the game will then play out accordingly.

In Stars Reach, happenings actually emerge from interactions. The underlying world simulation is operated by simple rules that roughly approximate physical and chemical effects, plant growth and animal behavior. The economic simulation operates on simple rules like limited supply (raw materials on a planet run out eventually), transport costs, production costs, player demand (item degradation causes regular need for replacements) and other things. And on top of that sits a layer of real social interactions (not simulated ones) of real people, that's supported through social structures like friends-lists, player organisations, player cities and planet governments.

And these simple systems and rules can interact with each other in very complicated ways - and that leads to complex, emergent bevahior. An oft mentioned example for complex player behavior emerging from very simple rules (a single infectious debuff), is the Corrupted Blood incident in WoW, which was caused by an unintended bug - but led to observed player behavior that actually sparked academic scientific interest.

Stars Reach isn't trying for such drastic, shocking effects - but using the same underlying principles to have layers of many smaller, more subtle things going on constantly and influencing each other. This can result in complex, dynamic behavior - and since the underlying rules are meant to mimic the real world, the resulting behavior should appear logical and natural. Predators hunting prey, prices going up when demand soars and supply dwindles - and going down again, when the marked gets flooded with a new material found on a new planet. Animals becoming friendly (or even tame), when you feed them and tread them well. Fire spreading to nearby flammable materials. Water dousing the fire. A break in a dam causing the water level to drop, and the downstream area to flood. And so on, and so forth.

And while the simulation rules will mimic the real world in order to create intuitive results - they will be tweaked to be fun and interesting, rather than realistic and scientifically accurate. The main goal is to simulate things that are interesting for the players to interact with - and anything that does not result in providing gameplay, is probably not worth simulating in the first place.

The game will be a true persistent state world
A persistent (state) world is a virtual world which - as defined by Richard Bartle - "continues to exist and develop internally even when there are no people interacting with it."

In the case of Stars Reach the simulation on planets will actually be paused when no players are there - but as soon as a player arrives, the simulation will secretly fast-forward through everything that would have happened in the player's absence - and thus the world will appear to the players as if it just had kept on going during all that time.

The internal state of the game world will always be saved and advanced forward in time. It will never be reset, nor be static. The world will change and evolve according to the game rules - and how the players interact with them.

This pillar does overlap quite a bit with the previous one. The Simulation is what makes the game continue to exist and develop internally even without players, and the persistent state of the world, is the data which that simulation operates upon. Obviously the Corrupted Blood incidence did not rely on a persistent state world (which WoW doesn't have) - but it did attach to persistent character states instead (or character pet state, in this case).

The game will be driven by player community and interdependence
This pillar ties strongly into what has been explained in a previous 'Riffs by Raph' article: Designing for Social Play.

The friendships, feeling of community and social ties that we experience in a game, are some of the biggest reasons that we keep coming back and playing more. And Stars Reach wants to support and foster that, through various means, like for example allowing players to be members of multiple different guilds/clans/organisations at once.

But interdepence between players is what ties it all together, and even makes solo players part of the fold. In Stars Reach, everyone is going to depend on others, in some form or fashion. Every crafter is going to have a chain of suppliers, every player is going to have their favorite playershops to buy their items and get them repaired, everyone is gonna have their favorite watering hole/saloon/cantina/whatever to get their buffs, everyone is gonna have their favorite planet or city for gearing up before as well as regrouping after a fight. Every one is gonna have their buyers and fences for the materials they loot/mine/farm/harvest/extract...

Players are going to depend on each other for goods, services and support. Some more, some less - but nobody is going to be an island. Everyone will at least partake in the economy, which is entirely player-driven. There are no NPC vendors that will turn crap into credits, or sell basic items at an unchanging base-price. To sell your stuff, some other player has to actually want to buy it. And that also means, that there probably wont be any trash loot in the game - everything will have a purpose and be useful to someone.

Second Set: Ease Meets Depth
The game will be deep: a set of proven game mechanics brought together in one universe.
Controls and interfaces will be intuitive and simple and familiar.
We will support varied clients so that players can play on whatever device they choose.
Third Set: Optimistic, Retro Sci-Fantasy
Stars Reach is a game about hope and optimism
The game will have deep lore
The game will be welcoming and fun and beautiful
The game will constantly generate new content
Playable Worlds originally had an office located in San Marcos, Califiornia - but ever since the pandemic they are working remotely with yearly company-meetups in person.

Rumors
The seed investment round was lead by "BITKRAFT esports ventures", who were also investing in Crypto projects at that time. This led to some people mistakenly believing that the game Playable Worlds was working on might have something to do with esports and/or crypto. This has been publicly denied by the Playable Worlds team multiple times. There will be neither esports nor crypto in Stars Reach.

Lore Glossary
* The Old Ones
** A incredibly powerful ancient alien civilization, long-vanished. We don’t know what they looked like, or what they called themselves. We simply call them the Old Ones. They were arrogant and powerful enough to create life.
* The Garden
** The name by which the Old Ones referred to our galaxy, the Garden.
* The Servitors
** The Old Ones first attempt at creating life. Mechanical life driven by artificial intelligence. Following the Robot Wars, Servitors roam the spacelanes, tending the terraformed worlds of the Garden and following the orders of their long-vanished masters. Some may even dream of freedom. For all we know, some have already broken loose of their programming and lurk in the distant asteroid fields ready to crunch organic entities into goo between their giant steel-plated teeth.
* The Robot Wars
** A time when robots promptly rebelled against their makers, the Old Ones, and attempted to exterminate all organic life in the Galaxy.
* The Cornucopia
** The waste from the Old Gods attempt at genetically engineering new life. When the Old Gods made a mistake, they would tell the Servitors to just throw the goo away over on that asteroid over there. Well, the Servitors, being robots, were very literal, and threw it all away on that one asteroid, that one right there, where it merged together into a biological hive mind that calls itself the Cornucopia.
** The Cornucopia believes itself to be the next level of evolution for all life in the Galaxy, destined to swallow up all other life into its communal mind as the ultimate expression of the Gaia hypothesis. It also has pretty severe daddy issues. Its spores fly through the Galaxy infecting worlds, which the Servitors are constantly cleaning up (and occasionally sterilizing to bare rock, with apologies to the inhabitants).
**The Gaia Hypothesis proposes that living organisms interact with their inorganic surroundings on Earth to form a synergistic and self-regulating, complex system that helps to maintain and perpetuate the conditions for life on the planet.
* The Humans (Humanoids)
** Humans are another creation of the Old Ones. Not just the humans that look like hairless monkeys, but also the ones that look like cats, or like demons… lots of kinds of humans, different on the outside but all the same on the inside.
Reddit /r/MMORPG AMA with Raph Koster

"This is a post-colonial galaxy in which the Old Ones committed galactic-scale genocide, and now humans have managed to destroy their own homeworlds. It's one where sentient artificial life (the Servitors) are essentially still enslaved by masters who aren't even here anymore. There is a LOT of room for hefty, provocative, deep storytelling in the lore."

Lore

The Cornucopia believes itself to be the next level of evolution for all life in the Galaxy, destined to swallow up all other life into its communal mind as the ultimate expression of the Gaia hypothesis. It also has pretty severe daddy issues. Its spores fly through the Galaxy infecting worlds, which the Servitors are constantly cleaning up (and occasionally sterilizing to bare rock, with apologies to the inhabitants).

In the meantime, we humans have a second chance to do better with the worlds we have inherited. Some worlds are harsh and unforgiving. Others have cute bunnies that eat people. The stars are ours now. We have been given a galaxy.

What will we make of it?
